Safety Tips For Driving an RV at Night

Driving at night is difficult enough, nevermind when you’re behind the wheel of a motorhome or towing an RV. However, sometimes circumstances force you into a difficult situation, and you have no choice but to drive your RV at night. When this happens, use these tips from Sun & Fun RVs to keep yourself safe.

Never Drive While You’re Tired

Fatigue makes it harder to concentrate and reduces your overall reaction speed, both of which are important in regards to safe driving. If the person driving the motorhome or tow vehicle is tired, switch drivers at the next opportunity. If there are no rested and alert drivers available, it might be best to simply pull over and get some rest.

Interior Lighting

Interior lighting can be very distracting when driving at night. Turn off or dim interior lights to make things easier on the driver, and shut off light sources such as electronics if possible. 

Watch The Road For Animals

Nocturnal animals like deer and racoons are much more active at night, meaning your chances of colliding with an animal in the late hours are much higher. This is especially true in forested or rural areas. When driving through these areas, pay attention to road signs. Roads that are frequently crossed by animals are usually marked as such. If you do see an animal, press down on the breaks instead of swerving. 

Add More Exterior Lighting

If you’re worried about driving or hauling your RV at night, try adding some exterior lighting or upgrading your headlights. This serves two purposes. One, it means you’ll be able to see better, and two, it will make it easier for other motorists to see you. Just make sure that your lights aren’t so bright that they blind other drivers!
