The small size and limited features in an RV can make it more challenging to prepare food when you’re camping. You might want to avoid parking yourself in the hot kitchen entirely and just eat fast food, even though you know that’s not the best idea. Eating at restaurants and drive-thrus isn’t the healthiest choice and it’s also pretty spendy. The truth is that you can alter how you cook just a little bit to make meal preparation something you enjoy while camping, instead of something you dread.

Sun & Fun RVs is your Quad Cities RV dealer, located in Tiffin, IA. Here are some of our top tips for making cooking in your RV as easy as possible.

1. Prep in Advance

A little preparation ahead of time will save you bundles of time on the road that you can spend relaxing or adventuring with your family instead. Before your trip, plan out what you’ll eat each day and compile a shopping list for only the foods you’ll need for those recipes. Determine ways you can batch-cook extra meats or side dishes like pasta to reuse for another meal.

2. Use Your Grill

A small grill that fits in your RV storage compartment is a great accessory to invest in for cooking, especially during the summertime. A grill lets you cook hot food outside, sparing you from cleaning up the kitchen. Grill hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken breasts, vegetable kebabs, fish that you catch and more. There are plenty of recipes online for how to wrap food up in foil and grill it instead of cooking it in an oven, including lots of desserts!

3. Freeze Meals

If you’d really rather use your home kitchen with all its accoutrements and spices, then do so! Rally the family together and prepare your favorite meals at home in large batches. Then portion out your lasagna, goulash, chili or casserole into Tupperware containers and stick them in the RV freezer before departure. You can either decant the food onto baking sheets to heat it up in the oven or simply stick the Tupperware in the microwave when it’s time to eat.

4. Cook Less

This might sound a little strange, but you can actually prepare a lot of meals without ever turning on a stove or oven. Instead of a hot breakfast, have yogurt, granola and fresh fruit. For lunch, cold cuts, cheese and veggies will make delicious sandwiches. Dinner could be leftover grilled chicken or fish tossed in a salad of greens or leftover pasta. Be creative and figure out ways you can reduce the amount of meals you actually cook.
