Part of being a responsible fifth wheel owner is making sure that you’re prepared for emergencies and capable of operating your fifth wheel in a safe manner. There are many aspects to fifth wheel safety that you may not have considered; here are some of our recommendations on how to keep yourself and your passengers safe.

Stock Your Trailer

You need to make sure that your fifth wheel contains several crucial safety items, including:

  • A first-aid kit with ointments, bandages, painkillers, bug spray, sunscreen, tweezers, nail clippers, and any medications you and your family will need.
  • An emergency hand-crank radio with a flashlight.
  • A hatchet or utility knife.
  • Rope and duct tape.
  • Extra warm clothing and blankets.
  • Additional non-perishable food and bottled water.
  • Fire extinguishers in the bedroom and kitchen, as well as one in an outer storage compartment if you have one.

Be Prepared

It’s never fun to think about emergencies, but they do happen. You should always alert someone like a neighbor, friend, or relative that you’re traveling and give them your itinerary. If you fail to keep in touch or return at an appointed time, they can send a rescue crew out to help you. It’s important to check in with this person, even if you’re otherwise staying offline.

You should also create a plan with your family in the event of a fire. When you arrive at a campsite, designate a distant area as your meeting place so that everyone can get away from the fifth wheel safely.
